Alaska Off-Road Wilderness Tour | 40 Minutes from Fairbanks | Family-Friendly | No Sled Dogs
A 2-Hour Guided Journey into the Heart of the Boreal Forest
Step off the beaten path and into the untamed beauty of Interior Alaska on our immersive, off-road UTV tour through the ancient landscape of the Tanana Valley State Forest. Guided by seasoned locals with deep roots in Alaska’s backcountry, this tour is designed to engage all your senses—from the scent of spruce sap and wildflowers to the distant calls of sandhill cranes echoing through the forest.
This two-hour wilderness experience is perfect for nature lovers, families, and travelers of all ages looking to explore Alaska’s wild side in a safe, comfortable, and awe-inspiring way—no hiking or technical skills required.
What to Expect
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at our base camp near the Chena River Valley, where you'll meet your guide and gear up for your UTV ride. Climb aboard a comfortable, open-air side-by-side, and head out along a network of historic trapline and forest service trails that wind through black spruce and birch stands, sweeping sloughs and gravel river beaches.
Your guide will take you deep into terrain shaped by thousands of years of glacial retreat, seasonal flooding, and forest fires—each feature telling a different story of this rugged land.
Scenic Stops & Wildlife Hotspots
Pause at peaceful ponds—prime locations for spotting beavers and their lodges. In the evenings, you may glimpse a moose wading through the shallows.
Navigate along creeks and clearings where wildlife frequently cross—porcupines, snowshoe hares, and spruce grouse often surprise us along the trail.
Keep binoculars ready for owls, hawks, and the occasional bald eagle soaring above the valley.
Wildlife Tracking & Ecology
Your guide will teach you how to read the forest—identifying animal tracks, scratches on trees, feeding sites, and the subtle rhythms of the boreal ecosystem.
Learn how predators like lynx and scavengers like ravens shape the balance of life in the North.
Flora & Wildflowers
Marvel at the vibrant pinks and purples of fireweed blooms in July and August, and discover how this beautiful plant is one of the first to grow back after wildfire.
Spot bluebells, yarrow, prickly rose, and wild rhubarb as they emerge with the shifting seasons.
Berry Season (Late Summer)
In August and September, stop along the trail to forage wild berries straight from the forest:
Blueberries, lingonberries, and raspberries line the trail
High bush cranberries and rose hips add a tart touch to your wild harvest
Taste the flavors of the land while learning about their traditional uses by Alaska Natives and homesteaders.
Stories from the Land
Throughout the tour, your guide will share true tales of life in the Alaskan wilderness—from surviving subzero nights along the frozen trails to wildlife encounters that make your heart race. Hear about the seasonal rhythms of mushing life, wilderness solitude, and the challenges of living off-grid in a land that demands respect.
These stories aren’t from a script—they’re personal, raw, and often filled with humor, wonder, and a deep reverence for the wild.

What is a side-by-side?
A side-by-side is a UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) designed for off-road use. Unlike an ATV, it features car-like controls—including a steering wheel, pedals, and seat belts—and is built for comfort and safety. Our side-by-sides have a roof and wind sheild for protection from the elements and are equipped with bench-style seating for up to six passengers, with front and rear seating. The name "side-by-side" comes from the two seats positioned next to each other in the front row.
Do sled dogs accompany us on this tour?
No. While our sled dogs love adventure, they do not join the off-road UTV tours. The distances we cover and the summer temperatures are not suitable for working northern breeds. These dog-free tours are designed to explore further into the wilderness while keeping our canine athletes cool, healthy, and resting during their off-season.
What are trail conditions like in the summer?
Summer temperatures in Interior Alaska range between 60°F and 90°F during June and July, with cooler days (50–60°F) in August. Rain is always a possibility, and temperatures can feel colder when wet. Our side-by-sides are roofed for rain protection, but we recommend dressing in layers and bringing a light waterproof jacket for maximum comfort.
How bad are the mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes—often jokingly called Alaska’s “State Bird”—are common in the summer months. However, while riding, the speed and airflow of the UTV significantly reduce mosquito activity. We provide insect repellent on-site, but if you're particularly sensitive, we recommend wearing long sleeves, lightweight pants, or a bug net for extra protection.
