Do Sled dogs like to run? And Is Dog Mushing Humane?
Yes—when practiced responsibly and with care, dog mushing is not only humane, but it is a deeply enriching experience for both dogs and humans.
At our company, the well-being of our dogs is the foundation of everything we do. Our team consists of Alaskan Huskies—a breed purposefully developed over generations for endurance, strength, and love of running. These dogs are not only physically built for mushing, they genuinely thrive on the experience. Their natural drive to work as a team, navigate trails, and explore the outdoors gives them the physical and mental stimulation essential to a fulfilling life.
How We Uphold Humane Practices
We are committed to the highest standards of animal welfare. Here’s how we ensure every dog is cared for with the respect and compassion they deserve:
🩺 Veterinary Care
Our dogs receive routine veterinary care, including annual vaccinations, deworming, and thorough health assessments. We also incorporate advanced therapies such as chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, and massage to keep our dogs comfortable, limber, and pain-free throughout their careers and into retirement.
🥩 Nutrition
Sled dogs burn thousands of calories daily, so we feed a high-quality, protein- and fat-rich diet that supports their energy needs, immune function, and muscle recovery. Every dog’s nutrition is closely monitored and adjusted as needed based on their individual health and workload.
💤 Rest and Recovery
Rest is just as important as activity. Our dogs enjoy scheduled rest days, ample downtime, and cozy, insulated shelters lined with straw for warmth. We pay close attention to each dog’s needs and energy levels to avoid overwork or stress.
🐾 Choice and Enthusiasm
One of the most heartwarming—and telling—signs of a happy sled dog is their eagerness to run. Before every outing, we observe their behavior and body language. Tails wag, paws tap, and howls fill the air. Our dogs choose to run, and their excitement is unmistakable. If a dog shows signs of fatigue, disinterest, or discomfort, they are never forced to participate.
👥 Lifelong Bonds
Because our company partners with independent co-op mushers, each dog is raised and cared for by one dedicated human caretaker for life. This continuity ensures that every dog’s physical and emotional needs are known and met with consistency and love. Our mushers know their dogs as individuals, not just as team members, and treat them accordingly.
A Relationship Built on Trust and Joy
Dog mushing, when done ethically, is a partnership based on trust, communication, and mutual joy. It allows these incredible animals to do what they were bred to do—run, pull, explore—and to do it in a way that honors their well-being.
We invite every guest to observe our dogs, ask questions, and witness the joy they radiate out on the trail. You’ll see firsthand what a happy, healthy, and deeply loved sled dog looks like.
